Tanking (Rules)
From SSBA Knowledge Base

Tanking will not be allowed. It tarnishes the league. It's not a realistic option in the nba, with dissent from owners, fans and players coming down on GM's. It will not be a viable option here, either. The top picks in the draft are meant to be used for bad teams who need the picks to get competitive, not for mediocre teams looking for the one piece to push them over the top. It also hurts playoff teams in the standings, as teams who played you earlier in the year had it harder to get a win than teams who are playing you now.
Process
If you see a depth chart where you think someone is tanking, send a pm to me, and it will go to review. The 3 moderators and I will then decide whether we think your intentions are to tank. It takes a unanimous vote (all 4 of us) in order for someone to immediately be labeled as a tank depth chart. Your box for the week in the check-in will then be marked red. Here are the punishments for tanking:
- 4 depth charts labelled as "tanks" in a season will give us the option to replace you in the league if we decide to.
- The accumulation of 2 tanking DC's in a full season or one tanking DC in the last 2 sims (Sim 11 and 12) can lead to the forfeiture of your first round pick, in the same manner as going over the hard cap.
- If one of the last 2 regular season DC's (Sim 11 and Sim 12) are considered tanking, those can carry over to the next season. Meaning, if it's determined you have tanked Sim 12, and you get 3 DC's marked as tanking the following year, that can qualify as the 4 total needed.
Moderators, if you do not wish to be in the decison panel, let me know and I will decide on someone to replace you.
Criteria for tanking
Unfortunately, there are no set rules we can lay down to squarely say you're tanking. That's why we require a nomination AND a unanimous vote. That way it requires your league mates to be upset at you and complete agreement from us.
Here are some of the guidelines we will take into consideration when making the determination if you are tanking.
- Are you trying to determine how much you can get from other pieces. If so, this is a valid roster move.
- Are you trying to determine the worth of younger players. In combination with these first two factors, which again constitutes a valid roster move. Trying to determine what contribution you can get from a guy with C, D scoring isn't going to fly, as you know they'll never be starters material with those ratings. Again, this is a judgement call.
- Are you routinely benching/placing on IR people whom regarly played 30 mpg or more before this and who do not have current injuries. This would be a sign of tanking.
- Have you abandoned your team and not been posting depth charts, even though you have been active in the league? Doing so can be considered purposefully losing games to increase draft position, and those missed DC's can be marked as tanked DC's.
- Are you trying to give playing time to players whom you are looking to increase trade value for? If so, this does not constitute tanking.
- Are you trying to protect a player from injury prior to a playoff run? Doing so is not considered tanking.
- Do your trades have other future benefit other than this years increased draft spot (i.e. getting rid of a bad contract or gaining a future draft pick)?
